Belinda Granger checks in from her home away from home in Roth. One of her favourite, if not her favourite, races on the triathlon calendar is Challenge Roth. This is her ninth time in a row lining up at this race and she fills us in on the atmosphere that surrounds this magical event.

The full pro start list is a long one. It’s very popular this year as it is also the European Long Course Champs – a big deal over here.
This will be my 9th time in a row lining up to race, and I’m still just as excited as ever. It really is the most amazing town. Everyone is involved in some way. Honestly I walk down the main street or into a shop and they all smile and say “ohhh ist die Belinda Granger”. It’s so funny! Of course, I bloody love it! They are just so up with it all.

It really is an amazing race. We have been here for a week now and have been hanging out with Cam Brown. We all went to Felix’s (Walchshoefer) house last night for welcome drinks. Where else in the world does the event owner invite you over for drinks? He really is one of a kind!

Race week is now upon us and this is when things start to get interesting. All the media and athletes arrive in town and there is a definite buzz. My days start getting very hectic come thursday – drug testing, pro briefing, media conference, Erdinger Party, autograph hour at the huge expo area – it’s all a lot of fun! This race will be shown live on television all day on Sunday as well as a huge TV package being made for a later date.

It is an amazingly deep field this year. Sure, there is no Chrissie Wellington, but, this actually makes it a lot more interesting as there are a few girls who could take the title on Sunday. My pick is Rachel Joyce, but there are a couple of German girls who will be right there with her – Julia Gajer (finished second To Chrissie last year) and also Sonja Tajsich. A German has not won this race for quite a few years, so I am sure they will be pushing for the win. But Rach is in great form. She only just arrived two days ago, but I am sure she will be ready to crush it come Sunday. I will be giving it everything. One thing on my side is that I know this course better than anyone – the course and the conditions – I will definitely be using this to my advantage. I also get a lot of support here as I am now considered a Roth ‘local’. My form is good and I have completely recovered from my last short course race and the travel. Now it is just a matter of resting up, getting in a few key sessions done and mentally preparing for Sunday.

If you ever get the chance to do this race then take it. You will not regret it. It’s the most amazing race in the world. The experience is seriously hard to put into words. The crowds on the course rival those seen at the Tour De France. It is impossible not to get excited out there on race day.
You can also check my facebook page on race day as I will be getting live updates on my facebook page as they have a special app now – my parents will be so happy!
