On the night of Sunday 15th April, more than 200 triathletes and their supporters got out of their swimmers and joggers to attend the 2012 Celebration of Champions Annual Awards dinner.

The glamourous event was held in Sydney, in Pyrmont with guests having pre-drinks on the decks, gazing out to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

It was an all ladies affair for the new inductees into the Triathlon Australia Hall of Fame. Three of our greatest female triathletes: Emma Carney, Jackie Fairweather and Loretta Harrop joined the three existing members; Michelle Jones, Miles Stewart and Greg Welch.

It is always exciting times in the sport of triathlon, but there is something very special about an Olympics year. Brad Kahlefeldt and Emma Moffat were recognized for their selection into the 2012 London Olympics team, as were those competing for the remaining spots.

It was a busy night for two of our current Triathlon World Champions, Craig Alexander (both Ironman and 70.3) and Melissa Rollison* (70.3), as both scooped the categories. Craig won the Male Athlete of the Year, 2011 Ironman World Series, 2011 Ironman 70.3 World Championships, plus the Athlete’s Athlete of the Year. Melissa picked up the award for Female Athlete of the Year for her dominate performance in the 70.3 world championships (you want to know how she does it? She let slip she train 4-5 hours a day). Young rising star Ashleigh Gentle won the emerging talent award.

While some of the big names of the sport were recognised in the Elite Athlete Awards, their was also great recognition for all the Australian Age Group World and National Champions plus the junior series presentations.

* Melissa Rollison is now Melissa Hauschildt after marrying her fiance and coach, Jared only last weekend. Congratulations Mel and Jared!
