Daniela Ryf put on a stunning display at 70.3 Wiesbaden to successfully defend her title and for the second year in a row, can call herself the 70.3 European Champion. Ryf sends out an ominous warning to fellow competitors set to take her on at the 70.3 World Championships title next month. The win also gets her one step closer to qualification to Kona, should that be a goal.

Leanda Cave was first out of the water in a time of 23:23 just three seconds ahead of Liz Blatchford. The two got themselves out of the water with a small advantage over Ryf who came out in a time of 24:16. Another one of the other pre race favourites Camilla Pedersen was just under two minutes down after the swim which wasn’t unexpected.

Ryf did the most damage on the bike riding superbly. An overall bike time of 2:36:42 was the fastest of the day and over five minutes faster the next fastest which was Laura Philipp. Cave and Blatchford biked similar times and maintained their three second gap.

After a 1:24:44 run split, Ryf crossed the line in a finish time of 4:26:12. Cave ran a cracking 1:22:40 to get herself into second place, one of the season biggest highlights for her. Philipp of Germany pulled off a career best result to take third just 24 seconds ahead of Pedersen. Blatchford struggled on the run course with a split of 1:29:211 to finish in fifth in a time of 4:41:07. Blatchford commented on social media that she isn’t sure why her run legs didn’t show up on race day, but such is racing.
