Ironman Australia may have had a small number of professionals racing, but it still produced a hotly contested race. The three women, Michelle Mitchell, Nicole Ward and Hillary Biscay were neck and neck all morning until the marathon. It took 10kms into the run for Mitchell to start to stamp her authority on the race.

The weather in Port Macquarie in the days leading up to the race had been inclement, with clear mornings being replaced by clouds and strong winds from the south each afternoon. But race day dawned clear and the day stayed that way producing perfect racing weather.

There had been much talk in the days leading up to the race of the small size of the professional field with only four women (and seven men) entered. The women’s field was further reduced to three when Kat Baker withdrew from the race in the week prior to the event.

A narrow swim course produced considerable congestion at certain points in the course. But, it didn’t seem to hamper experienced American campaigner Hillary Biscay (who now has 53 Ironman races to her credit), who was the first female out of the water (50:40) with both Michelle Mitchell & Nicole Ward just over a minute behind her.

Onto the bike, all three ladies remained close together, swapping positions throughout the entire 180km bike leg. By the end of the bike leg, Biscay had only a five second gap over Ward with Mitchell, who described the bike leg as one of the toughest she has encountered, being another 60 seconds back.

Out of transition and onto the run, Biscay immediately looked tight and uncomfortable. Whilst Ward and Mitchell were both running much more smoothly. Biscay held the lead until the 10km mark when Mitchell made her move and passed both Ward and Biscay to take the lead.

From that point, there was no stopping Mitchell, who produced the fastest women’s run split (3:08:38) to power ahead to her first Ironman win (having previously won Challenge Barcelona) in 9:34.

Ward couldn’t produce the speed needed to match Mitchell and finished second in 9:44. Biscay faded on the run and finished third in 9:58, but not first without taking the time during the marathon to thank spectators for their support.

We will follow this up with a report on the Age Group race as well… Some fantastic performances.

Michelle Mitchell 9:34:57 – 51:48/5:29:57/3:08:38

Nicole Ward 9:44:40 – 51:50/5:28:57/3:20:47

Hillary Biscay 9:58:19 – 50:40/5:29:13/3:34:04
