dreamstimefree_144942This weekend Ironman will hit the ski fields for the first time in Whistler, Canada and though the snow will be absent, there are a number of Northern athletes looking for their first Ironman win.

From my knowledge of the 13 female athletes lining up, none have an Ironman win on their resumes. Uli Bromme from the US of A will go in as favourite having recorded a third at Ironman Coeur d’Alene, along with a number of 70.3 podium finishes. Christine Anderson also from the USA will be hot on her wheels as she placed just behind Broome recently at the Boulder 70.3. Another experienced USA Ironman racer is Lisa Ribes having finished fourth at Ironman France this year, showing that she has the strength on the bike and the ability to back it up with a solid marathon of 3:02.

But the Yankes will not be having it all their way, Christine Fletcher of Canada is returning to racing from a 3year break. Fletcher has been a regular 70.3 podium finisher and will no doubt be looking to slot her name in the history books as the inaugural Subaru Ironman Canada winner. Along with a number of other hometown athletes including Julie van Veelen, Christine Fletcher, Martina Wan, Gillian Moody and Sarah Baker, who will all be taking advantage of the race being on their doorstep. With a number of athletes around similar ability it should make for some exciting racing.
