Ironman Lanzarote and Ironman Texas – plenty of triathlon for the weekend. The likes of Mary Beth Ellis, Cailtin Snow, Amy Marsh, Bella Bayliss and Heleen Bij da Vaate are racing this weekend. Christie Sym is our Aussie athlete on the Ironman circuit for this weekend.

Ironman Lanzarote

Ironman Lanzarote’s motto is “Normal limits do not apply.” It is known on the circuit as one of the toughest. The island hosts world championship windsurfing events in June, so to say it’s windy on the island is a fair understatement. Add to that, Lanzarote is a volcanic island – so the temperature is up there, and the climbs can be brutal.

The swim is two laps, and then athletes ride around the entire island taking in some amazing scenic sights. They will then run a three lap marathon which is relatively flat.

This year, the women’s professional field is 12 deep. Bella Bayliss is a proven champion at this race taking out top honours in 2009, and a fourth in 2010. She has spent plenty of time racing and training in Lanzarote, so knows the course well. This is her second race since the birth of her son, and will be gunning for number one.

Heleen Bij de Vaate also knows the island well. She placed second in 2008, and third in 2006. She hasn’t won at the Ironman distance since her win at Ironman Arizona in 2008. However, last year she cracked the nine hour marker with a 8:56:11 and took fourth at Ironman Austria.

Ironman Texas

The swim course is a point to point swim, followed by a single lap rolling bike course. Spectators can then enjoy a three lap run course to see their favourite athletes, family members and friends racing.

Mary Beth Ellis had a monster year in 2011, taking out three Ironman titles (Austria, Canada and Regensburg), and will be close to taking out this race in the US. Amy Marsh recently came third at the 70.3 Texas race, and has four Ironman titles under belt over the past few years. While Caitlin Snow boasts one of the fastest marthons on the circuit. This race could come down to the wire.
