Lauren Barnett secured her maiden 70.3 victory at Ironman 70.3 New Orleans. Sarah Piampiano backed up well from 70.3 Texas and finished in second with Hallie Blunck in third. A race that saw the Top four only separated by three minutes.

As expected Haley Chura led out of the water with a time of 24:12 with former short course athlete Anna Clever just behind in 24:34. Barnett started off the day with a deficit coming out of the water in 29:09 and Piampiano coming out nearly five and half down on Chura.

The bike was going to be where pre race favourite Piampiano was going to make time up, but unlike last week at 70.3 Texas, Piampiano did not have the fastest bike time. That went to American Danielle Kehoe who biked the 90km in a time of 2:19:18 but went on to DNF.

Piampiano still with an impressive time of 2:20:53 was good enough to put her in a great position to take the title. But with Barnett and Blunck riding less than two minutes slower, Piampiano had her work cut out on the run.

It was Barnett who was able to run it home strongest of those in contention coming across the line winner, with a run split of 1:26:22, the second fastest of the day and just 1:01 ahead of Piampiano in second. Blunck came in 45 seconds behind her in third.

Impressively the fastest run was by Laurel Wassner. Her split of 1:25:53 was not enough to get her higher than fourth place finish who was 1:28 off a podium.
