Two hours north of Melbourne you hit what you may think is the sleepy country town of Shepparton. But there is no sleepiness about Challenge Shepparton.

Shepparton is steeped in triathlon history and tradition and draws great fields across the age group and pro ranks each year. It’s not just about the triathlon though, Challenge Shepparton has so much more with trikids, enticer triathlon and the Run4Us fun run on Saturday before the half distance on the Sunday, as well as a sprint and olympic distance races taking place.

Whilst being a central town location with everything in close proximity (which is always a bonus and makes life very easy for a race) it’s has a very rural feel and is more picturesque than you may first think. A lake swim, two loop bike, but with a run course that weaves in and out of the woodland and round the lake, bringing the athletes back to the finish line.

It is extremely hard to go past Annabel Luxford for the win at Challenge Shepparton in 2017. Luxford is one of the best in the world, and coming off a top ten finish in Kona, is sure to be the one to beat in Shepparton.

Jacqueline Allen (nee Slack) is more regularly found on the trails and tracks of Xterra racing around the world however has competed with success at several triathlons over the years and will be a strong contender for the podium.

Anna Eberhardt comes to Victoria off a few second places, one being at Challenge Iskandar Puteri, and will do battle for the podium along with local Melbourne based athletes Tracy Morrison and Renee Kiley.

If you’re in Shepparton for the weekend racing or supporting the triathlon, be sure to also check out the Moooooving Art around town. An ever changing public art exhibition of life sized 3D cows, paying homage to the strength of the dairy industry in Greater Shepparton. The region produces a large percentage of Australia’s dairy exports and there are over 90 cows in the herd!
