After a short break to recharge the batteries, professional racing returns for 2018 this weekend with Ironman 70.3 Pucon in Chile. A field of seven will face the starter with a couple of familiar names headlining the opening race for the year.

Chilean Barbara Riveros may be better known for her short course exploits, however, she has had a mortgage on this race in recent times with three consecutive victories. In 2017, Riveros won against a filed that included Haley Chura and Alicia Kaye. A year earlier she defeated the likes of like Rachel Joyce and Lauren Brandon.

Riveros branched out to race some other half-distance races in 2017 with great success and comes into this as the one that they have to beat again.

The favourite to spoil Riveros’ party is, without a doubt, Ellie Salthouse. The Aussie overcame a mid-year injury in 2017 to win Ironman 70.3 Miami. She is the real deal when it comes to half distance racing and will be gearing up for a huge 2018. If anyone can stop the Riveros reign, it is Salthouse.

Valentina Carvallo has been a regular on the podium in Pucon. The Chilean has graced the dais in 2014, 2015 and 2016, finishing second twice and, more recently third. She looks to be the best local hope outside of Riveros and will benefit from her wealth of experience on the course.

American Laurel Wassner and Brazil’s Bruna Mahn loom as two other solid podium chances in the small field.
