Barbara Riveros ensured she remained the undisputed Queen of Chilean half-distance racing when she took out her fourth consecutive Ironman 70.3 Pucon on the weekend.

The diminutive Chilean unleashed a 1:21:58 half-marathon to consolidate and emphatic, nine-minute win over Australia’s Ellie Salthouse with compatriot, Valentina Carvallo filling third place.

Salthouse went into the race as the main danger to Riveros and did her utmost to take the race up to the reigning champion early on.

The pair exited the water together, almost two minutes ahead of Carvallo and Bruna Mahn.

They then went toe-to-toe for the duration of the 90km bike leg, with neither combatant giving any quarter to their rival. They had already ensured that the race was between them, opening up a whopping 13-minute margin between themselves and Carvallo.

Given her strength on the run, Riveros exited T2 as the favourite to secure her fourth-straight title and she lived up to her reputation.

The Chilean put a minute on the Aussie over the first three kilometres and, by the halfway mark, she extended that ascendency to four-minutes.

Riveros’ half-marathon was eight minutes faster than anyone else in the field and proved to be the difference. It will be interesting to see where the Brett Sutton coached speedster heads in 2018 with her last 12-months proving she could be anything over this distance.

It was a solid start for Salthouse who will head towards some big races this year, including the Ironman 70.3 North American Championship in St. George and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

For Carvallo, it was a case of continued success in Pucon with 2018 being her fourth appearance on the podium at the race. She has now finished second twice and third twice in her home race.
